There is nothing worse than getting a cold sore just before a party! That's what just happened to me. Not only are cold sores extremely painful but I'm so self conscious and unfortunately there truly is no way to cover up one of these ugly blisters.
What causes Cold Sores?
Cold Sores are caused by a virus and are not completely warded off by our body's own defense system. For this reason they usually recur over time. There are a few things that can cause this virus to make it's unsightly appearance. Stress and Fatigue. Your diet. Colds and flu. Prolonged exposure to the sun without lip balm with sunscreen. Changes in the immune system. Food allergies. Menstruation. If you are among the very unlucky to have the virus like me, as much as I hate to admit it, no matter how much we try to prevent it sometimes the onset of a blister is just unavoidable.
Cold sores are highly contagious. Passed on by any skin contact, therefore kissing and sharing drinks or eating utensils should be avoided during an outbreak so as not to pass on this nasty viral infection. I would hate to be the cause of someone else contacting the virus due to my own carelessness therefore I make sure to use every precaution and constantly wash my hands.
Abreva. I now keep the small tube of cream in my purse at all times! Abreva.com states "Simply put, Abreva is the only non-prescription cold sore medicine approved by the FDA to shorten healing time and the duration of symptoms." When I rub the cream on my blister I find instant relief from the cold sore and it clears up within days!
Before the party I put some Abreva on the cold sore making the blister white, but you know what? I didn't even care (okay, maybe a little self conscious at first), I totally forgot I even had a cold sore because of the instant soothing relief!
